Digital Goes Yo-Yo with an Analog Touch – October 2018

Changing Tides - October 2018

Over the past 20 years, the digital economy has transformed entire industries. Entertainment, retail, travel, and media sectors have been turned upside down. Digital brands such Airbnb, Apple, Amazon, Facebook, Google, Netflix, TripAdvisor, Uber, and Yelp have displaced former category leaders like Blockbuster, Kodak, Radio Shack, Circuit City, Yellow Pages, and Yellow Cab as well as travel agents and media companies everywhere.

But digital isn’t always better. We still touch things with our hands, hear things with our ears and see things with our eyes — all of which are decidedly (and beautifully) analog reception devices. Older analog technologies provide the kind of tactile physical experience that human beings innately crave as part of their basic existence.  One example is the resurgence of vinyl records and printed books.  Another is Amazon, one of the biggest disruptors, who has recently entered the grocery business, is now opening  physical locations for books and products nationwide. MailChimp, a leader in email marketing, now offers postcard mailing services.

The results of these ventures will pave the way for the rediscovery and/or rebirth of older analog technologies which provide a tactile physical experience that a purely digital world has started to remove.
