Strike Out or Reach First Base? It Depends on the Plan

Young Company

You might have the world’s ultimate product. Or record-setting service. But unless you also have a solid digital marketing plan, you’ll strike out before you reach first base. You can bet your competition has done some planning. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be so far ahead. Now it’s your turn.

What goes into a well-wrought plan? Generally, three elements -- The first is the campaign goal. This seems self-evident. Everyone must know their destination, after all. Yet, surprisingly, many proceed minus this fundamental necessity. Don’t be one of them.

The second strategic element is a complete listing of all media to be used and how each will factor into the campaign. No shortage of possibilities here. On the table is everything from social media to broadcast television. What’s your pleasure?

Finally, you must incorporate a workable budget -- early and accurately. Otherwise, a campaign could come up short at the most inconvenient time. It’s imperative to know where those dollars and cents are going – before they leave the wallet.

Effective digital marketing plans are built on these fundamental elements. But this only scratches the surface. Sound strategies also include subsidiary plans, which prepare you for the unexpected. For instance, negative reviews. You may get a few, no matter how glorious your product. Can’t please everybody.

Nevertheless, you can neutralize the venom by developing strategies that anticipate possible complaints and establish a conciliatory response for each.

Word of caution: Ignoring negative reviews is not an option, as inaction marks you as unconcerned lout. The world will take note.

So, what will it be – strike out or reach first base? For the latter, you’ll need a plan. For the former, you’ll need a whole lot of excuses.
