Marketing: Now Playing on the Small Screen

Wide-screen was once the way to go. From mega-colossal movie experiences to flat screen TVs with wall-size dimensions, bigger was definitely considered better. But, this ideology may no longer be relevant for brand marketers keen on video promotions.

According to Ooyala, the well-known provider of video technology products and services, there has been a 400% jump in mobile video viewing within the last two years; viewings doubled in the last year alone!

While most videos continue to be watched on large screen devices such as PCs, giving them a hefty 75% of the action, mobile maintains a steady surge in popularity growing to a total of 25%. And, that number is predicted to double by 2016. This poses the question—how far the trend will take mobile video viewing.

Why are people rushing to the smaller screen? First, mobile screens are bigger than they were before. Second, the playback is significantly smoother, thanks to the increase in connection speeds. Finally, the vast selection of videos continues to grow as more and more videos are uploaded each day.

While these all are big draws to the small screen, movie theatres needn’t fear a tremendous erosion in their customer base any time soon. Most small screen viewing involves short clips of either six minutes or less. When viewing time increases, so does the preference for a larger screen. Clearly, there’s a definite correlation between viewing minutes and choice of device.

Ooyala also discovered a correlation between weather conditions and viewing times. Studies have shown that when temperatures dip, people watch videos 29% longer than they do when beach weather prevails. It is even concluded that rain can sometimes increase video viewing by 40%.

Does this mean brand marketers should gear their video campaigns to correspond with weather patterns? Well, it couldn’t hurt. However, one thing is for sure – the small screen is definitely gaining traction, and it is where many of your customers will be found presently and in the future.
