Facebook and Twitter Book Ships to Uncharted Lands

The tweets aren’t coming as loud or as often. That’s the disturbing report from the Twitter sidelines. As things now stack up, the number of Twitter shares is dropping fast. Not that Tweet Central is wobbling on weak legs. Far from it. Twitter still boasts in excess of 310 million active users per month. Always a good sign. Nevertheless, the downward trend is cause for concern.

Facebook, too, has lost some ground in the sharing department. According to a report provided by The Information, personal Facebook sharing has slipped by approximately 21%. Personal sharing, of course, is its stock in trade. Or least, was.

Apparently, Facebook, has devised a way to compensate for dwindling personal posts. Their method is simple – attract more news updates. And they are. Bad tidings for Twitter. News buzz was and still is Twitter’s forte, the pinnacle of its power. By grabbing more news items, Facebook is dipping deep into the Twitter well. Thus, Facebook has replaced its lost shares with those that until recently were posted by avid Tweeters. Almost overnight, Facebook has evolved into a current events hot spot.

Facebook has a pretty good idea where its lost personal shares went – Snapchat. According to user responses, this site is fast becoming the preferred destination for personal updates. No matter. Facebook is in the news game now.

Don’t Count Twitter Out of the Game

Yes, Twitter has lost major yardage. But it’s still in the game. To prove it, the social network has cut a juicy deal with the National Football League. According to their agreement, Twitter will broadcast live digital streams of Thursday Night Football. Will this attract a wider audience of users? We’ll have to wait for kickoff.
