Ecology Making Waves

Unless you’ve spent the last decade on an interplanetary excursion, you know that going green is all the rage here on planet earth. From installing solar panels to recycling water, people are going all out to preserve the health and natural beauty of our environment. Yes, we’ve come a long way from the early days of the eco-movement, which received a major push from the counter-culture phenomenon of the 60’s and visionary leaders such as scholar Theodore Roszak. In fact, things have progressed so far that even the sports world has embraced the cause.

From July 30-Aug 7, the 2011 Nike U.S. Open of Surfing will be rocking Huntington Beach, CA. Total number of fans expected to attend: in excess of 500,000. That’s a lot of surfing enthusiasts — and a lot of potential litter. Mountains of it.
Fortunately, event organizers will be implementing their own intensive counter-litter strategy – an on-site recycling store known as TRASHed. It works like this – people cruise on over to the store and exchange their recyclable bottles and cans for a special token. Then when the mood strikes them, the happy recyclers can redeem the token for cool merchandise and prizes. Possibilities are a Netflix subscription, lip balm, a sample CD, and more. Not bad.

Also helping to keep things sparkling green will be an on-site water station. Fans just need to bring their reusable water bottles here, and they’ll get a free fill-up of fresh, clean H2O.
And if you’ve got a skateboard that’s seen better days, there’s no need to toss it on the junk heap. Converse is teaming up with skateboard recycling company Art of Board to operate an skateboard reprocessing center right there at the contest. So if you’re bored of your board, don’t chuck it. Recycle it.
Nice to know there’ll be plenty of opportunity to be good to our planet at this amazing event. Hope you’ll get to attend, and hope you’ll do your part. And, of course, if you have any questions or comments, be sure to send them our way.
