Digital Marketing: Social Mutations

Ok, sure we expected the changes. But not this fast. Not so fast it’s hard to recognize our familiar destinations these days. The changes in question refer to those taking place in the world of social media. Next to the speed of light, these are perhaps the swiftest in the universe. And they’re happening across the board. Here are some of the more notable ones:

We Know Who You Are and What You Want – A not-so-long time ago, you could drop into a favorite social hotspot and see newsfeeds arranged in beautiful chronological order. Not anymore. Thanks to the increasing use of algorithms, networks such as Twitter offer more personalized news displays. Relevance is everything in this new order, with news items now being listed according to personal preferences. Predictably, user interaction is surging as a result.

Massive Re-Organization – Remember when hashtags were the ultimate method of categorizing posts and images? Well, apparently this method wasn’t cutting it anymore for Facebook and other networks. Just look at how they’ve been going all out to upgrade their categorizing functions.

Consider Facebook’s newly-unveiled ‘topics’ feature. This handy option enables users to organize their interactions around specific topics. Not to be left out, Twitter has joined the re-organization crusade by allowing users to customize their posted photos.

Marketing Gets the Red Carpet – Advertising now provides a hefty source of operational funds for social sites. So it’s only natural that these platforms are devising new ways to lure in marketing bucks. A glaring example of marketer-friendliness is the new collection of advertising tools available on Pinterest. Expect to see increasing levels of user engagement as these efforts to grab advertisers continue.
