Google made major news last week when it eliminated the right rail (sidebar) ad slots and moved its CPC paid search results into a single column on the left. While consumers will appreciate the clean white page look, it will impact marketers in 3 significant ways:
- Position becomes more important than ever, raising prices for those coveted top PPC slots.
- Quality Score, Geo segmentation, and Mobile become equally important.
- The value of local listings, video and image SEO will skyrocket.
While no one has yet projected the financial impact of Google’s fast maneuver, I think it will produce at least $20B in annual revenue, of which the majority will fall to Google’s bottom line.
