A Memorial Weekend to Remember

Changing Tides – June 2021

A Memorial Weekend to Remember

Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day originated in 1971 tracing its roots all the way back to the Civil War when Northerners and Southerners alike were looking for a way to publicly mourn their fallen.

Most observances were concentrated in the South, where the most Civil War graves were located. While the Civil War took between 620,000 and 750,00 civilian and military lives from both sides, by comparison, Covid 19 has claimed over 600,000 U.S. lives and millions worldwide. For many people, the Worldwide Pandemic will be the closest thing to a world war as they will ever experience in their lifetime.

This weekend we have an opportunity to do more than be thankful for those who have served in our military. We have an opportunity to celebrate the beginning of the end of Covid 19 and give thanks to those who risked their lives to help save ours.

We have waged a long, painful, and expensive war against this deadly virus. And while America has had the greatest casualties, it has also developed the most popular vaccines faster than any other nation. For this, we need to be truly grateful that our public/private partnerships are working effectively to bring this war to an end.

I hope you can see your family and friends this weekend and take a moment to appreciate the magnitude of what has been accomplished.
