5 Email Subject Lines that Increase Open Rates!

1.  Self Interest:

Let’s be honest: customers will click on ideas/products they have a bias (or need) towards.  So, why not CLEARLY display the benefit of opening your email? These subject lines are direct and share how it will benefit your audience by opening the email.  Something like “How We Increased Traffic without Increasing Ad Spend!” would fit perfectly into this section. Think “case study”.

2. Curiosity:

You want to peak the interest of your subscribers just enough to get them to open the email.  This can be done by asking a question…such as “Do You Need More “X” in Your Day?”  Try to use questions that are easily answered YES or NO. Making the user feel positive or hopeful will improve your open rates.

3. Offer:

Directly state that you are sharing an offer in the subject line for subscribers to open. This is one of the most common type of subject line, and for good reason: it usually works. By putting the offer front and center, you will instantly trigger a reaction among your subscribers who are looking for a deal/discount. Offering discounts like free shipping or 22% off would be perfect in these subject lines. Don’t be afraid to let your offer be known…it IS the reason you are sending this email!

Caveat Emptor: Too many ‘act now’ emails WILL deter your subscribers and will lower your open rate.  This is a fact. BUT! That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t send urgency-based emails. In fact, having a countdown IN your email is a great way to infer the idea that your offer isn’t around forever, and acting now is the right move.  Just use sparingly and remember…if everything is urgent…then what is really important?

5. Humanity/Story:

Thanking your subscribers is important as well as sending holiday greetings will make you stand out. Don’t be afraid to show your personal side in your emails. This is a great way to relate to your subscribers, by showcasing your shortcomings/success, in a way that feels inclusive. Let your subscribers know they aren’t alone, and your email list is a way to stay connected to them!

Now, this list is by NO MEANS the only way to increase your open rates for emails, but its a place to start!

Don’t be afraid of using your list, its the reason you collected emails in the first place! And if you have any questions, or would like for us to run your email marketing campaigns…contact us today!
