Power Through the Digital Blizzard

Power Through the Digital Blizzard

Too much head scratching and gawking out there. Throngs of brand marketers, prowling office corridors, wondering how find their way through the digital blizzard. All those new technologies, processes, and practices. Which trends matter? While there are many possibilities, none is having a bigger influence than the following:

Mobile Video Ads

By now, it’s no surprise that mobile video consumption is soaring. Between Q3 2012 and Q3 2014, viewings surged by 400%. Currently, mobile videos grab about 30% of online viewings.

Fueling mobile video mania are several developments, most notably the expansion of 4G/LTE and the introduction of a more spacious iPhone 6 screen. Also contributing to the trend are ‘phablets’, the designation for large-screen smartphones. Expect the popularity of phablets to climb, which in turn will take mobile video viewing considerably further.

Brands who shrug their shoulders and ignore mobile videos will be hard hit – According to experts, these non-believers could be cutting themselves off from 69% of mobile traffic.

Native Advertising

Also showing plenty of momentum is native advertising – those information ads that resemble articles. Spend for native ads is expected to skyrocket from $3.2 billion in 2014 to $8.8 billion in 2018. There’s good reason for the bullishness – native ads score above-average engagement, as reported by eMarketer.

Native ads are destined to be particularly attractive to Millennials, who ordinarily shun the obviously ‘salesy’. For this group, it’s all about information over hype.
